Waiting For Rejection

So yesterday I shlepped to the post office, clutching in my sweaty little hands the Stargate novel proposal for Fandemonium books. Got it in just under the wire -- according to the instructions, it had to be postmarked by November 30th (luckily, they don't have to receive it by November 30th; the clerk told me that it would get there in 4-10 working days). Made me crazy trying to make the deadline -- it's been a busy month -- but at least that's one thing I've finished that doesn't have to do solely with generating income.

Aw, congratulations and good luck! I'm thrilled to hear that you've submitted a proposal and will keep fingers and toes crossed for you.

Thanks! I'm not a fanfic writer, which put me at a distinct disadvantage, but I thought it was worth a shot. (Actually, I'm surprised that more of the writers here haven't announced they sent in proposals. I mean, if you can come up with someting like Tatters....)

I don't know - I think not writing fan fiction could be an advantage from another point of view. You're clearly a lovely and evocative writer, just from your journal entries, one, and but secondly, you're not in the habit of allowing the characters to flop around all irresponsibly, which is what I get out of writing -- and reading -- most fan fiction. I'm trying to imagine winnowing down something like "tatters" to work in a pro-novel format, and I come up with a plot-heavy mess, sans all the over the top scenes that make the story fun to write. Don't think I could do it.

Might be scared to do it, too, since it would make what's always been a hobby ... work. And then what would I do for fun?

But that's only speaking for myself, of course. There may be lots of fan fiction writers here who have submitted proposals and are not so cheerfully brave as thee in admitting it.

Why, thank you! Right back atcha.

I can certainly understand that. That's one of the things that may separate fanfic writers from professional writers (and I use the latter strictly in the sense of somebody being paid for their work) -- the former write for themselves and their audience, while the latter often also have, in the back of their minds, "What can I sell?"

All that being said, I think you could probably do a wonderful job on a full-fledged tie-in novel. Maybe next time there's an open call, you might want to give it a shot...
