Just saw the latest Doctor Who. Really creepy -- there was one scene that was really nasty, in a good, head-under-the-covers way.

Spent the day wandering around the Metropolitan Museum. Went to the Temple of Dendur for the first time in years. Noticed all the 19th century graffiti that had been etched into this several-thousand-year-old Egyptian temple -- English gentlemen using their penknives to carve their names into incredibly ancient ruins. And they complain about spraypaint on the subways....

oh lucky you to be at the met. and good point about the graffiti. i saw something on the science channel this weekend in which they showed some of the ancient egyptian graffiti *inside* the pyramid.

ps. did they redo the cafeteria with the fountain?

Well, we went to the downstairs cafeteria, but I didn't notice a fountain.... Just several counters of overpriced and rather trendy food.

The Victorians were apparently big on leaving their mark. I remember years ago going to see Stonehenge, and reading all the names carved there...

i used to go there with my grandparents when i was a kid...loved the fountains...but i think they took them out. *sigh*

they're the ones pictured/described in that wonderful book: "the mixed up files of mrs. basil e. frankweiler". it's a story about two kids who hide out at the met when they run away from home. delightful kids book that i grew up with. :)

i was at stonehenge in 1970, also amazed at the names. it's like an archetypal reflex....see big monument....carve/write name. meep.
